An Oblique Approach
by David Drake and Eric Flint

ALIEN MINDS BATTLE
FOR BYZANTIUM

In northern India the Malwa have created an empire of unexampled evil. Guided or possessed by an intelligence from beyond time, with new weapons, old treachery, and an implacable will to power, the Malwa will sweep over the whole Earth. Only three things stand between the Malwa and their plan of eternal domination: the empire of Rome in the East, Byzantium; a crystal with vision; and a man named Belisarius, the greatest commander Earth has ever know. . . .

A little difficult to get into at first but gets much better after the first chapters, would have gotten five stars otherwise

Ran out of Hammer's Slammers books. Enjoyed Weber and Ringo but needed A David Drake fix -- wonderful! A fun alternative history story told by the Rommel of military scifi.

Drake and Flint created a great series together. Belisarius and his cadre become likable but flawed characters. I think the authors did a good job of considering the wider implications of the changes they instigated in the timeline. They also avoid the fan-boy trap that so much military and/or historical SFF falls into. Their chosen (and, one assumes, admired) subjects do not become unstoppable juggernauts, or godlike persons who never make mistakes.

I bought "An Oblique Approach" after discovering Eric Flint via 1632. I love the book, I love the whole series! I'm really looking forward to them being reissued in dead tree format in the future.
