In the Stormy Red Sky-ARC
by David Drake

TAKE BACK THE BLOODY VEIL

With a new destroyer command under him, now-Captain Daniel Leary and master spy Lady Adele Mundy are off to the backwater Veil region on a diplomatic mission.  Did we say diplomatic   Yeah, right. What they find is a local warlord ready to throw Cinnabar from the region, a vile aristocrat dealing in slave labor—and a huge Republic of Cinnabar Navy defeat that has thrown the entire sector under the crushing heel of the vile Alliance.

Time to fight back—and that Alliance stronghold in the nearby Monserrat cluster looks awfully vulnerable. Okay, actually, it looks impregnable to any but a determined Leary and Mundy. But should they achieve the impossible yet again, they do have an occupying army nearby—if only they can free it from its chains!

Master and Commander to the Stars!

"[R]ousing old-fashioned space opera."
Publishers Weekly on the "Cinnabar" series.

"Drake couldn't write a bad action scene at gunpoint."

It was great to get back to Leary in Command series. This book has all the flavor of the original. Great job!

Though the RCN continues to reward Daniel's charmed career with difficult challenges, this book is Adele's chance to shine. I was very happy to see her develop social and emotional ties to the world that rejected her so thoroughly in her youth. There will never be anything warm nor fuzzy about Adele Mundy, but she seems to have found happiness at last. Her generosity to a crushed opponent was touching at the end of the book. Oh, and I liked the joke about someone taking bodyguards to meet with her.

Emotional satisfaction? 5+ stars. Plot? 4. Action? 4. This is a great series and only continues to get better. I felt this book was shorter than earlier entries although I have no real idea since it's an ebook. Although it's still plenty long. One of the things I love about this series is that each book adds to the whole. Each novel builds on past works and sucks you further in to the alternative universe it's set in, and further into the little world of Leary and Mundy themselves. You grow attached even to minor characters like Barnes, Dasi, and Sun. That said, I felt this installment was a bit 'shorter' than other entries although still plenty long, and it seemed like there were fewer action sequences. On the other side, character development leapfrogged forward in a very satisfying, but also uncontrived way. I will be freaking out until the next installment comes out.

I like David Drake not because he comes up with innovative ways to blow stuff up, but because of his characters and the relationships between them. I cheered long ago in the story where Tromp tells Hammer that "you have to to have loyalty to something more that men" and Hammer tells him "No". The adventures of Leary and Mundy continue to give me characters to cheer for and worry about. Thanks David.

A fine book. And I've got to say, it's not before time that Adele forgives herself for being alive. Perhaps in some future volume, there will be the possibility of a Chatsworth heir.

I liked it a lot. Not as cerebral as the early Leary books but great fun.

Not to be harsh, I have all the works the author has written in this series, but he may have become a bit too comfortable with this genre. The plot could have been lifted from a number of other works in large loads. Space piracy? :-)

This book was awesome... probably the best in the series. You'll be in an adrenaline rush by the end of the last chapter. I think the climax is the second to the last chapter. Until then you'll be holding you're breath. Other than that, whoever did the little summary above messed up big time... Its a cruiser not a destroyer, Republic not royal, and the last paragraph is written with large amounts of confusion. I think this book may hit some of the bestseller lists.
