Lots of things going on in the story and it got a bit crowded with characters. But the story worked and there was plenty of tension without it being a tired old "war between us and them". Pacing worked and I stayed interested. The resolution was a bit weak, but the idea of the "big misunderstanding" between two very different cultures at not so different technology levels was well done.

I have enjoyed all the books that Michael Z. Williamson has written - except this one. While the writing was fine, I just didn't like the story. Some of the worries about first contact seemed a bit contrived to me. It seemed like a long book to cover a very few concepts.

While I enjoyed the read and especially the idea, I had a problem with the book. It was odd, but while reading this story, I felt like I was listening to a conversation where I couldn't hear one or two words out of three. Maybe it was me, but this seemed to develop so much off-camera that I kept on wondering what was going on.

This reads like a short story from The Golden Age of Sci-Fi and I'm rating it as four stars on its merits in the field. However, when compared solely to Williamson's other works it rates a three out of five, as it isn't up to par with his other pieces. The author tried something new and had an interesting premise, but it would have sufficed as a short story.

I very much enjoyed this book. It was a surprise to see Williamson hold down the violence for a change. I do wish the book's back cover was more accurate. I ended up with feeling the blurb writer went: "hmm. Mad Mike. Chinran. Many people die". I don't know whether its that Mike has aged and matured, but this book was about avoidance of war. Good on him.

I enjoyed this book. It comes across as a long Short story however. It is nice to see the re-introduction of an old friend. But, it just read like a stretched out story.
