Norse mythology meets the 20th century, and our protagonist--Randy, ex-Army--mixes it up with Odin and his pals (not to mention the Valkyries :) to go after his buddy Gary, taken by Odin, who isn't playing by the rules (so what else is new?). Then again, Randy has his own ideas, as he says to Odin... "How would you prefer to die, old man? Fifty-megaton hydrogen bombs at ten paces? That ought to do the trick, eh? Or maybe just swords at dawn? How about recoilless rifles? M-1 tanks?" While this volume stands on its own, it begs for a sequel. Ragnarok and the forces of Surt and Muspell still loom. And that means bringing some modern military discipline to Valhalla, including finding and enlisting a few good, albeit dead, men... "Would Patton be here? He was another traffic accident, like Gary. But when had Odin begun to pilfer the 'wrong' men? And—for another instance—how about Caesar? He'd been murdered by a bunch of civilians."

Extraordinary book... I'd love to see a sequel, but to be honest I have no idea if such a sequel would be possible... the difference between swords and nukes is a little too great. (And if that intrigues you, good, go read the book [grin].)

Actually a fun book. I really appreciate the Norse Mythology aspect; not enough is done from that viewpoint. Reading this, and other Baen books online offers the opportunity to surf the net for added background information. Now, if only she'd finish the series... [hint, hint]
