1634: The Baltic War
by Eric Flint and David Weber

Fight for Freedom in a Dark and Bloody Age!

After a cosmic accident sets the modern West Virginia town of Grantsville down in war-torn seventeenth century Europe, the United States of Europe is forged in the fire of battle.  The Baltic War reaches a climax as France, Spain, England, and Denmark besiege the U.S.E. in the Prussian stronghold of Lubeck.  The invention of ironclads, the introduction of special force tactics during a spectacular rescue operation at the Tower of London – the up-timers plan to use every trick in the time traveler's book to avoid a defeat that will send Europe back to a new Dark Age!

Multiple New York Times best-seller and creator of the legendary "Honorverse" series David Weber teams with New York Times best-selling alternate history master Eric Flint to tell the tale of the little town that remade a continent and rang in freedom for a battle-ravaged land in the latest blockbuster addition to Flint's "Grantsville" saga!

"This is a thoughtful and exciting look at just how powerful are the ideals we sometimes take for granted, and is highly recommended[.]"
Publishers Weekly on Flint and Weber's 1633.

"[R]eads like a Tom Clancy techno-thriller set in the age of the Medicis…"
Publishers Weekly on New York Times best-seller, 1634:  The Galileo Affair.

This is a wonderful series. The adventures of our 007 POW in Denmark are worth the read all by themselves.

I got hooked on 1632 and 1633 from the free library, this I thought up to that standard.

I really enjoyed this book. I found that I was reading it way into the wee hours. It ties together many threads that have been sort of hanging out there, particularly the fate of the group in England. The Flint-Weber collaboration yields real dividends. I hope it continues.

A little slow moving in spots, but did cause me to go to an art museum to review Ruben's paintings.

The book is anticlimactic! 1633 ended with a BANG, but in this book much happenes. Once the campaign is resumed the enemy surrenders the initiative the USE and Sweden who easily defeat their opponents on land and sea. The beloved characters of 1632 and 1632 are shoved into the background and replaced by some new up- and downtimers we did not read about before. A necessary read to be up to date, but not much tension and even less fun than in previous books.

A well paced, entertaining & enthralling installment of the 1632 series. The principle figures introduced in the first novel have further character development & the story continues to draw you in.

Unfortunately, the whole book reads like a summary. I am hopelessly addicted to the series, so I bought it and read anyway, but IMO it is the worst in the series yet.

10. Douglas on 4/22/2007, said:

If there's one criticism I could level, it's that this book tries to do too much, and sometimes passes over areas that you would believe from the previous books would be major parts of this one. Outside of that quibble, a good read and I'm looking forward to the next installment.
