The Ultimate Y2K Glitch....

1632 In the year 1632 in northern Germany a reasonable person might conclude that things couldn't get much worse. There was no food. Disease was rampant. For over a decade religious war had ravaged the land and the people. Catholic and Protestant armies marched and countermarched across the northern plains, laying waste the cities and slaughtering everywhere. In many rural areas population plummeted toward zero. Only the aristocrats remained relatively unscathed; for the peasants, death was a mercy.

2000 Things are going OK in Grantville, West Virginia. The mines are working, the buck are plentiful (it's deer season) and everybody attending the wedding of Mike Stearn's sister (including the entire membership of the local chapter of the United Mine Workers of America, which Mike leads) is having a good time.

THEN, EVERYTHING CHANGED....

When the dust settles, Mike leads a small group of armed miners to find out what's going on. Out past the edge of town Grantville's asphalt road is cut, as with a sword. On the other side, a scene out of Hell; a man nailed to a farmhouse door, his wife and daughter Iying screaming in muck at the center of a ring of attentive men in steel vests. Faced with this, Mike and his friends don't have to ask who to shoot.

At that moment Freedom and Justice, American style, are introduced to the middle of The Thirty Years War.

I Love this series. It's educational and apropriate to the current situation in America. What do the ideals behind our founding documents really mean anyway? What a great way to explore that question.

It was good, but the author's repeated sermons on trade unions came off as too preachy. Who was the villain of this novel? The corporate executive and not feudalism? Sad.

Really good read and well worth having the whole series on your PDA or whatever you use. Like others, I still love a "real" book but I have been reading ebooks on my Palm phones for 4 years and find it so useful to have a book or ten sitting there, many bought from Baen. Great company, excellent site and brilliant value compared to the rip off rates of many other sites and companies who charge more for an eBook than I can get the paperback for in the local bookshop! Awesome book. Awesome series. I'm hopelessly addicted and this is where it all began. This is one of those books that really makes you go hmmm. Highly recommended but, beware the addictive nature of the series.

Basically I downloaded the 1632 eBook because it was first on the list to try out the concept of eBooks. After reading it for a bit I donated to the Free library library and started to purchase more books as I really am enjoying the format. While good old paper will always be great sometimes carrying a couple of books around is just not possible and this has been great as I travelled and went to various meetings. The novel itself was a very enjoyable read. While the characters were a bit formulaic with the good being good and the evil being evil that really is a basic staple of heroic fiction. The story and its characters are all well written and over the course of the novel develop a bit of depth and character. You do come to care for the main characters and I found myself worried when they were in peril and enjoyed their triumphs. While the overall concept of a fish out of water and out of time works well my more cynical side finds that all the characters are too easily accepting of the differences between a modern society and a fuedal one. But, this is a slight niggle and doesn't seriously stop one from enjoying the novel. I see many more eBooks in my future and lots more of Eric Flint.

This is the book that got me started reading Eric Flint. I really enjoyed it, and Flint's background as a history scholar really shows.
