On Basilisk Station
by David Weber

HONOR HARRINGTON

Having made him look a fool, she's been exiled to Basilisk Station in disgrace and set up for ruin by a superior who hates her.

Her demoralized crew blames her for their ship's humiliating posting to an out-of-the-way picket station.

The aborigines of the system's only habitable planet are smoking homicide-inducing hallucinogens.

Parliament isn't sure it wants to keep the place; the major local industry is smuggling; the merchant cartels want her head; the star-conquering, so-called "Republic" of Haven is Up To Something; and Honor Harrington has a single, over-age light cruiser with an armament that doesn't work to police the entire star system.

But the people out to get her have made one mistake. They've made her mad.

Excellent sci-fi series that will get you hooked on the very first book. Once you start, you won't be able to stop and you might even find yourself going back to read them again shortly after. Thank you Baen for offering the first two free and the remainder of the series at prices much cheaper than Amazon! I'll always buy here first if they're avalible!

This is the first in the Honor Harrington series which is basically a more modern update of the Space Opera genre of Science Fiction. There is a wonderful heroine and her empathic companion and plenty of slimy villans out to do her harm and with any good story the tension between the hero/heroine and the villan is very important. No real hero can be heroic if the villan is substandard and there are lots of villans to despise in this series. Also, "the end justifies the means" philosphy is both repugnant and relevant to current events both with the way a government operates and how religous fanatics justify their behaviour. The technology behind the basic ideas of the series are obviously fanciful but are consistent and well thought out as are the depth of most of the characters. You find them believable and consistent. The battle scenes can be a bit much for some readers in their technical details but you don't really need to fully understand it all to pick up the atmosphere of the battle. Battles are very much a combination of modern dog fighting with submarine warfare and wind powered ship tactics tossed in for good measure. Overall the scenes while a bit detailed and gory at times are never overwhelming and add a lot of emotional weight to the story line. If you are an OCD reader, i.e. if you find an author or series you like and then have to read all the rest then you have a lot of reading ahead of you if you pick up this book. I have read the early Honor novels before but when I found the eBook format I went back and got them from the start and started over and have enjoyed re-reading the series. One of the problem that an OCD reader like myself has is the inability to keep all the books they enjoy due to the partner refusing to turn yet another room into a library and so I am finding eBooks a great way to reclaim the novels I enjoyed in the past and my spare bedroom.

A must read for Naval, Sci-fi, or just plain strong female character fans! Of course it smacks of "Horatio Hornblower in space" but if you get beyond that it stands on it's own with lots of great details. Especially for those of us who actually are in the space industry the great descriptions of problems with light speed communications and telemetry in combat really sold me. Plus David even managed to come up with a plausible reason for ships to need broadsides in 3d Combat!

The first book in the Honorverse and a great read. Weber has yet to write something that isn't great :D

Amazing book, amazing author. I read this book in a moment of boredom and haven't regretted it since. If you're a sci fi fan, this is your book. The rest of the series is just as great.

This, the first, reads like an amalgam of 'Doc' Smith, Heinlein, and Forester. Fantastic storytelling, character development, and plotting. One can occasionally be swamped by the technical data and blinded by the political infighting but that doesnt detract. Read them all! And thanks Baen for the free library (I have, actually, bought all the Honor books). I've just got At All Costs and I'm using the free library to look for some other series'. Mike

This book just blew me away. I picked this book up after reading some reviews and seeing a special introductory version at the bookstore. The main character is one of the most likeable and honorable characters I've ever read about. The supporting characters are beyond compare and everytime someone dies or gets hurt its like a personal hit. If you avoid books because of female protagonists, don't avoid this one, its awesome and I highly reccomend it.

I really enjoyed reading the book, although I previously avoided military SF. The only part I partly skiped was the tactical description of the space battles...

The start of a great series. People who don't enjoy this book must not like female heroes. The only parts I didn't care for were technical stuff, so I skimmed those.
