I think it helps if you have read the entire series. Beast Master was originally written and read by me in the 1950s. My first SciFi, stolen from my older brother. Loved it, still have the ACE double book and I have read all the following books. By the way back then Andre Norton was still a guy who also wrote as Andrew North. Read the entire series if you can. The books do better as a series.

You don't get into the characters, they are rather flat. But it was an interesting consept.... who wouldn't enjoy being able to understand what our animal friends think? For great characters "The Witches Of Karres" by James Schmitz
