Heris Serrano
by Elizabeth Moon

WELCOME TO A SWEET DELIGHT

Heris Serrano was an officer from a family with a long tradition of distinguished service in the Fleet. So when a treacherous superior set her up and forced her to resign her commission, she thought life had lost all meaning. But she still needed to pay the bills—which was how she ended up as "Captain" of a rich old lady's interstellar luxury yacht, the Sweet Delight, which just added insult to injury ... or so she thought.

But Cecelia, the rich and exceedingly well-born old lady, turned out to have more brains than most admirals Heris had known, and when the pair ran into a secret society whose idea of "fun" was hunting and killing people, they quickly put a stop to that blood sport. But that was only the beginning. The heir to the throne himself was involved with the society, and Heris soon uncovered a plot against the royal family and a conspiracy within the Fleet itself. And whoever controlled the Fleet controlled the galaxy . . .

Before it was all over, Heris would be given a chance to rejoin her beloved space navy ... if she could manage to stop an invading armada with only one destroyer, two PT boats, one ore scow, and—oh, yes—an old lady's space yacht Sweet Delight. Impossible Not for Heris Serrano.

Publisher's Note: Heris Serrano has been previously published in parts as Hunting Party, Sporting Chance and Winning Colors. This is the first publication of the trilogy in one volume.

This is a wonderful series of books and as you finish each book you are eager to start the next one to see what happens next. Like the David Weber series of books that features Honor Harrington this series features female characters in a space navy that tries to protect their people from both external and internal forces. While I hate to fall into a gender sterotyping role the biggest difference between the Weber series and the Moon series would appear to be that of a male and female writer. In the Weber series there is a lot more numbers and details about the science of space warfare this is not to say that the characters are lacking but the science has a more defined edge and role in the storyline. In this series the science is there but there is a much greater emphasis on the emotional aspects of the characters. For example with the Serrano series rape is dealt with and does not trivialize it nor does it ignore that as a weapon of terror or torture that it will happen even if it does dehumanize the attacker more than it does the victim. The political structuers are more fragile and interesting and the situation is compounded by the social impact that rejuvination and possibly immortality brings to it. Lots of villans to boo and plenty of heroes and heroines to cheer for add to the pleasure of the read. Typically the heroic are a bit thick and wallow in their desire to meet their own ideals of perfection and the villans are incapable of seeing past their on selfish desires. I would say that this behaviour is a bit unrealistic but having seen our real life politicians in action it does seem that self-delusion is an occupational hazard. There is a lot of material in this universe to work with and I hope that the author continues to work with it, develop it and bring more reading pleasure to the world.

Not really the type of scifi I had expected but all the better for that. Rare combination of boldness and taste, so that villans are really rotten, heroes are really heroic (but not over the top... most of the time :) ) and yes, one of important 2nd plane characters is lesbian. Without any trace of either pornography or hypocricy and tokenism. Quite a feat. Or the major sub-plot of 2nd book, - it's easy for a reader to guess who the saboteur among Serrano's own crew really is, but instead of usual "Hey, where are heroes' brains? Yawn, close book, never open it again." reaction, I saw quite clearly, why they couldn't figure that out as easily, and still cared for them. Again, not quite easy thing to write properly.
