At All Costs
by David Weber

What price victory

The war with the Republic of Haven has resumed . . . disastrously for the Star Kingdom of Manticore. Admiral Lady Dame Honor Harrington, Steadholder and Duchess Harrington, the single victorious Allied commander of the opening phase of the new war, has been recalled from the Sidemore System to command Eighth Fleet. Everyone knows Eighth Fleet is the Alliance's primary offensive command, which makes it the natural assignment for the woman the media calls "the Salamander." But what most of the public DOESN'T know is that not only are the Star Kingdom and its Allies badly outnumbered by the Republic's new fleet, but that the odds are going to get steadily worse. Eighth Fleet's job is to somehow prevent those odds from crushing the Alliance before the Star Kingdom can regain its strategic balance. It's a job which won't be done cheaply. Honor Harrington must meet her formidable responsibilities with inferior forces even as she copes with tumultuous changes in her personal and public life. The alternative to victory is total defeat, yet this time the COST of victory will be agonizingly high.

One of the best all encompassing universes around. I'm so glad that Weber has decided to tell his story from all perspectives, instead of just "Us against Them." This is also the biggest cliffhanger I've ever been so emotionally invested in. Its cruel punishment to keep us waiting literally years to find out what happens next. But its Worth It!

I conotinue to be astounded by the depth and intellectual quality of David Weber's writing, most especially in this latest book in the Honor Harrington series. I bought it as an ebook because I couldn't wait to read it, but eagerly await its publication as a paperback in October. Weber's books are some of the few that bear re-reading, especially if you wish to grasp the complexity of the political, diplomatic, and economic aspects of the Harrington saga. In fact, I have reread them all to date, and am stilll thinking about aspects of them. To me, the most brillian aspect of the series is the fact he hangs it on an exceptional woman warrior. As a long-time supporter of "fem-lib" I truly appreciate how these stories support the view that women are equal (and sometimes superior) to men. George Hancocks, Agincourt, Ontario, Canada

I thought previous book(War of Honor) dragged a bit but it made me want to read this book....I immediately purchased it and couldn't stop reading it..... action packed and full of tension as I trembled at the massive slaughter sadly see many of our favorites die.... Peep, Manty, Grayson, or Andy Weber stories are people with people we like who regretfully do their duty or die trying.... Villans we certainly do have but they cross both sides and are (sorry for the quip) Less than Honorable... addendum: added this not to change rating(unless I can go higher than 5) but to add that some of us become dissapointed in the Queen.... I am getting to like the Peeps and felt she blew a chance to come togather with the Manties... well hopefully a new novel or 10 is brewing and we'll get to see Honor chart new courses.....
