Although not really a fan of H. Beam Piper, I happened to find this book in the free library and started reading it. I was unable to put it aside once I started! A most enjoyable experience. As another disabled reader, reading is one of the few enjoyments left to me, and the many books available through Webscriptions, either free or at a reasonable price, have allowed me to pass the time in an enjoyable fashion. I can no longer hold a paperback, let alone a hardcover, so reading an ebook on my computer or pocketpc are the only options left to me. While this book was not the best I have read it is certainly among the most enjoyable I have read. I highly recommend it to those readers reading this comment. Please, oh please, Baen Publishing continue the great work of making available excellent books at a reasonable price in an unencrypted format.

This was a very nice book. I couldn't stop reading it until I was through. My only gripe is in sink with my being a linguist and probably won't matter to anyone but another linguist.. It's the names. If these are the descendants of Indo-Aryans who would've otherwise colonized and conquered the Indian subcontinent, their names don't show any resemblance to Vedic Sanskrit but enormous resemblance to ancient Greek. If you are from India, you'll see what I mean when you read this. Ptosphes is a key example. Looks really Greek to me. Other than that, this was a great read.

Great story, though Roland Green and John Carr's expertise was in matching the style and expanding on the story-line of H Beam Piper [not to diminish the writing skills of any]. I read many of Piper's stories when they were first written, then lost them in the paperbacks I first read them in and failed to buy the collections while they were available. When "The Great King's War" became available I grabbed it as soon as I discovered it. I can't remember "Lord Kalvin" very well, but "The Great King's War" blends in with the other Paratime Police stories. I appreciate the effort that went into creating it. And I'm hoping to read the other sequels to it. I'd like to also give my appreciation to Baen Books and the participating authors for the ebooks they've made available, especially for the free membership for disabled readers. As a victim of a sudden, catastrophic paralysis, reading is my chief source of enjoyment, especially reading from a computer. I used Baen's free books when I discovered them, and when they made the Webscriptions available I signed up immediately. I appreciate the enjoyment they have provided. To those who enjoy H beam Piper's writing and who have had difficulty finding it, I recommend "manybooks.net" which has many of Piper's out-of-copyright stories.

The best thing about Carr's three sequels to Piper's LORD KALVAN OF OTHERWHEN is that he doesn't try to imitate Piper's outdated (sorry!) style. It's unfortunate that the last two in the series are available only as expensive hardcovers. Chris should know that the shorts he mentions were expanded and self-published as novels by Carr.

Doesn't *quite* mesh with LORD KALVAN OF OTHERWHEN, but is a very good read on its own. Sadly, the two short stories "Kalvan Kingmaker" and "Seige at Tarr-Hostigos" are both in out-of-print (and impossible to find) anthologies.

This was a great read. Catch the first book in the series, Lord Kalvan of Otherwhen by H. Beam Piper. And the third, and fourth books, also by John Carr. Kalvan Kingmaker and The Seige of Tarr-Hostigos. A great series and a great read. The Deposed King
