While it's not as good as A Fire Upon the Deep, it is still a Five Star Book. As other's have said, the plot is entertaining, with unexpected twists. In addition, there are discussions of freedom and individuality which add more depth to the book. (It should get an extra star as well written libertarian propoganda, but it's already a five star book.)

Really well done. It even surprised me with part of the plot. That’s such a rare and special thing. It took a while for the author to set things up but it was well worth the wait. Excellent read.

Vinge does it again. A wonderful follow-up to A Fire upon the Deep. It's a prequel of sorts, although the only connection is a single character whose story here has no bearing on AFutD. Set in the same universe, the story shows how alien humans can be, and how humans aliens may be. As before, characterization is not set aside in favor of action. The stage isn't quite as wide as AFutD, but the story is every bit as compelling, with the aliens every bit as unusual and as compelling. This is another book that I already own in hardback and paperback, and will gladly add to my electronic library, too.

This is an incredible book, the first where the aliens are both human (when the story is show from their perspective) and utterly alien (when it is shown from the human perspective). I have the paper version, but I'll buy the ebook too, if it has an at all reasonable price.
